History of Dommusik St. Stephan | The Office of Domkapellmeister | Cathedral Organists The Domkapellmeister of St. Stephen’s Between 1356 and 1509, surviving records mention 21 “Cantoren zu St. Stephan” [Cantors at St. Stephen’s]. Since these individuals were mostly clergymen, it is difficult for us today to distinguish between canons (members of the diocesan chapter) and cantors, who only had to perform musical responsibilities. Only after the office of Cantor had passed into secular hands were receipts (invoices) drawn up containing concrete information.
