Cathedral Organists at St. Stephen’s
Written records from the fourteenth century mention organists only by their first names, such as Magister Peter from around 1370, who may have also been an organ builder.
The records do not become clearer until later when musicians were no longer exclusively members of the clergy. With so many tasks to be performed at St. Stephen’s, organists were often required to work for free. In certain cases these individuals are known to us as adjuncts; later on, payments were made to a second Cathedral organist, and in the twentieth century many organists were not official employees. The position of Dommusik Assistant was created in 1984.
